How to apologize the right way

You’re talking to Morgan, someone you let down. Two days ago you missed Morgan’s birthday dinner. Their texts have been short since. The goal: own it, no excuses, and say what you’ll do differently.

Your first line

“Morgan, I’m sorry I missed your birthday dinner. I know it mattered to you, and I wasn’t there.”

Clean apology: say what you did, plainly and first, with no “but.” Naming why it mattered to them shows you get it.

What Morgan might say, and what to say back

  1. Morgan: “Okay.”

You: “I get that you’re upset. I’d like to hear how that night was for you, if you want to tell me.”

  2. Morgan: “It’s not about the reason. You just weren’t there.”

You: “You’re right. The reason doesn’t change it. I wasn’t there, and that’s on me.”

  3. Morgan: “How do I know it won’t happen again?”

You: “That’s fair to ask. I’m putting your plans in my calendar with reminders, and I won’t pick up extra shifts that day.”

Two things that trip people up

Now say it out loud

Reading the words isn’t the same as saying them. Practice this one with Morgan pushing back like the real person would. Then your coach, June, fixes your exact words. The move to focus on: Clean apology.
