How to ask someone to hang out as friends
You’re talking to Noah, someone you see at the gym. You see Noah at the gym most weeks. He’s between sets. The goal: turn small talk into a real plan to hang out.
Your first line
“Hey, we’re always here at the same time. Want to grab food after the gym on Thursday? No pressure if you’re busy.”
Specific invite with an easy out: a real plan with a day, and room to say no, so yes feels easy.
What Noah might say, and what to say back
Noah: “Ha, yeah, for sure, sometime!”
You: “Cool. Does Thursday around 7 work, or is the weekend better?”
Noah: “This week’s kind of packed.”
You: “No worries. Want to swap numbers and pick a day next week?”
Noah: “What did you have in mind?”
You: “Nothing big. There’s a good taco place across the street. Tacos after our workout Thursday?”
Two things that trip people up
- “We should hang out sometime” with no day or plan.Name the what and the when: “Food after the gym Thursday?”
- Over-explaining why you’re asking, or pushing after a no.Keep it light. After two vague maybes, say “All good, see you around” and let it be.
Now say it out loud
Reading the words isn’t the same as saying them. Practice this one with Noah pushing back like the real person would. Then your coach, Sol, fixes your exact words. The move to focus on: Specific invite.
Practice this one free3 free reps a day. No sign-up. Out loud or typed.
