How to join a group conversation
You’re talking to Chris, with two friends. The goal: join in naturally without hijacking it.
Your first line
Chris starts with “...so we were thinking the lake, if the weather holds.”
“Oh, the lake sounds fun. Which one are you thinking? I heard Saturday’s supposed to be sunny.”
Second question: a follow-up about their plan shows you were listening, and the weather tip adds something without taking over.
What Chris might say, and what to say back
Chris: “Oh, hey.”
You: “Hey! Didn’t mean to eavesdrop, it just sounded good. Do you all go there a lot?”
Chris: “Yeah, we’re still figuring it out.”
You: “Totally. If you need one, I’ve got a big cooler that never gets used.”
Chris: “It’s kind of a small thing, just us.”
You: “Oh, all good. Have fun, and let me know if the water’s warm yet.”
Two things that trip people up
- Asking “Can I come?” before you’ve added anything.Add to their topic first. If they want you there, they’ll ask.
- Switching the topic to your own weekend story.Ask a question that includes everyone, like “What’s the best spot out there?”
Now say it out loud
Reading the words isn’t the same as saying them. Practice this one with Chris pushing back like the real person would. Then your coach, Sol, fixes your exact words. The move to focus on: Second question.
Practice this one free3 free reps a day. No sign-up. Out loud or typed.
